Entrepreneurship

Social media has become a go-to option for news, journalists have to develop entrepreneurship skills in order for publications to stay relevant. They may be small, but when an entire staff works together, they can go a long way.

Live Tweeting

During my first two years on the staff, one of the primary ways I helped attract readers to our social media was by Live Tweeting large sporting events. I gradually became the primary staffer to Live Tweet events, from varsity football games to the FHSAA 8A baseball state c hampionship game. Even simple things like tweeting out a picture of the scoreboard after the game helped. We also used Twitter to promote our website, and subsequently our print edition, by tweeting out links to newly posted stories. At our most populer, our main Twitter account @hagertyjourn, had over 1000 followers with tens of thousands of interactions interacions for our most populer tweets.

WOOF TV

When I became Online Editor, one change I made to increase traffic on the website was uploading the school announcements show, WOOF TV, on the home page. Every weekday (except Wednesdays), I go to WOOF TV's YouTube channel , take the embed code from the latest video and put it on our home page. There have been some obstacles in this endeavor, from late uploads to county WiFi not allowing the view of YouTube videos, but I haven't let it stop me from working to integrate two programs. This has increased views for both our website and WOOF TV's channel.

Know your Audience

This promo I made for a rivalry basketball game against Oviedo shows how knowing your audience can get you noticed. When I filmed myself shooting a half-court shot, it caught people's attention, especially after the loud screaming from the students that ran into the shot afterward. The pumped up tone of the promo is infectious, and for several days afterward, people came up to me and told me "Good Job" on the shot. If announcements shows want to keep students engaged they need to try things like this that give the news in a way someone will pay attention too.
